What does itty nitty actually mean?
I thought it means small thingy. It may be a cute pair of japanese chopsticks, a small hello kitty key chain, or earings, pins, paper clips. Are all these can be categorized as itty nitty?
In fact itty nitty is an American re-wording of the expression ‘nitty gritty’
the expression appears to have risen in the early 19th century in France but was translated into English .. the French being ‘ici, ici’ (here,here) used among courtiers to denote the discovery of the ‘privy’
the English (being ever so ‘proper’) adapted the expression to mean “have found the smallest bits” .. since they considered the expression meant to be ‘nits and grits’ ..
In later Victorian times the parlour maids were made to be sure to clear the ‘nitty gritty’ bits of fluff and dust from a household.
Latterly it has come to mean .. getting down to examining the finest details
